Tech Talk: An Understanding of How Your Hotel Wifi Network is Failing Your Guests

With all the changes in guest’s demands, you should have an understanding of why your hotel’s wifi “Never Works!”

  • In the last two years, EVERY network has seen exponential growth in network demands
  • Low powered devices have exploded the demands

IRC began operations with the advent of wifi networks (in 2002) – We’ve been down this path. And we want to provide the answer of what is truly necessary to meet your guests’ demands.

First, Review the Timeline of Network Growth

2002 – 1 out of 5 guests carried a laptop with 100mw
2012 – 3 out of 5 guests carried a laptop, but a new device type was emerging
2014  – Every guest carries a device. And 3 of 5 guests carry 3 low-powered devices.

Low powered devices

  • Uses one third the power of wifi
  • Wifi used is more intelligent – network only responds 1 out of 3 or 4 times.
  • Batteries last 10 times longer

To Meet Guests’ Demands:

1. Your AP’s Need the Capability

  • Access Point (AP) Density Upgrade – What used to need 300 foot spacing, AP density now needs to be less than 75 feet to be able to support talking to devices
  • Each AP needs to support 80 devices within the 75 foot spacing
  • Devices are mobile, so the network has to be intelligent enough to switch from one AP to the next as the guest moves

2. Your Gateway Needs the Capability

  • Ability to handle 1700 devices that connect to each other at one time (when it used to see 60)

3.  You will need an Engineered Solution in order prepare your property for your guests’ needs.
